What Are Casino Comps?

Casino comps (short for "complimentaries") are free goods and services that casinos give to players based on their level of play. These can include free rooms, meals, show tickets, airfare, limo service, and even cash back.

Contrary to popular belief, comps are not based on how much you win or lose. They're based on your theoretical loss (theo) - what the casino expects to win from your play over time based on the house edge of the games you play.

How Casinos Track Your Play

For Slot Players

When you insert your players club card into a slot machine, the casino's system tracks every spin. The system records your total coin-in (amount wagered), time played, and game type. This data is used to calculate your theo based on the known house edge of that machine.

For Table Game Players

Table game tracking is less precise but follows the same concept. Floor supervisors observe and manually record your average bet, time played, and game type. Some casinos use RFID chips or other technologies for more accurate tracking.

Understanding Theo (Theoretical Loss)

Theo is the mathematical expected value the casino anticipates winning from your play. It's calculated using this basic formula:

Theo = Average Bet × Decisions Per Hour × Hours Played × House Edge

For example, if you bet $100 per hand on blackjack (1.5% house edge), play 70 hands per hour, for 4 hours:

Theo = $100 × 70 × 4 × 0.015 = $420

The casino would expect to win $420 from this play session on average, though your actual results could be very different in the short term.

How Hosts Evaluate Players

Casino hosts look at several factors when determining comp eligibility:

  • Average Daily Theo (ADT): Your average theoretical loss per day of play
  • Trip Theo: Your total theo for a specific visit
  • Rolling 12-Month Play: Your total play value over the past year
  • Frequency of Visits: How often you visit the property
  • Relationship: How long you've been playing at the property
  • Special Circumstances: Events, holidays, or casino occupancy levels

Most casinos comp back somewhere between 20-40% of your theo. A $500 theo trip might yield $100-200 in comp value, though this varies significantly by property and your relationship with your host.
