What Is Theo Loss and How Do Casinos Calculate Your Comps?

"Theo loss" — theoretical loss — is the number every casino comp decision is built on. It's the expected amount the house will win from your play, calculated from your average bet, decisions per hour, hours played, and the house edge of the game. Whether you actually won or lost that trip is irrelevant. The casino comps you on theo, not results.

The Formula

Theo = Average Bet × Decisions/Hour × Hours Played × House Edge

Example: $50 bet × 70 hands/hr blackjack × 4 hrs × 0.5% house edge = $70 theo. Your comp value at 0.3% reinvestment = $0.21.

Why Theo Matters More Than Actual Loss

If you went up $500 on that blackjack session, the casino still credits you with $70 theo. If you lost $500, same $70. The casino prices comps on the expected outcome — that's why a winning trip still earns mailers.

How to Use Theo to Your Advantage

Play games and properties where the reinvestment rate is higher. Locals casinos (Station, Boyd) reinvest 0.4%–0.6%. Strip resorts reinvest 0.15%–0.3%. Same theo, very different comp output.
